Weight Management

Weight management is not just about body weight — it is closely linked to overall health, including cardiovascular risk, blood pressure, blood glucose control, joint health, energy levels, and long-term wellbeing. For many people, weight loss can feel confusing due to conflicting advice or overly restrictive approaches.

Effective weight management focuses on gradual, realistic, and sustainable dietary changes, rather than short-term or extreme dieting. The aim is to support fat loss where appropriate, preserve muscle mass, improve metabolic health, and maintain nutritional adequacy.

Why It Matters

Excess body weight, particularly central weight gain, is associated with an increased risk of:

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol

  • Heart disease and stroke

  • Joint pain and reduced mobility

  • Fatigue and reduced energy levels

  • Reduced quality of life

Evidence shows that modest, sustained weight loss (5–10%) can result in clinically meaningful improvements in cardiometabolic health.

What to Expect in Your Assessment

During your session, your dietitian will:

  • Review your current situation – including weight history, medical background, medications, lifestyle factors, current physical activity levels, and dietary intake.

  • Use motivational interviewing approaches – to explore your goals, priorities, and readiness for change, ensuring advice is collaborative, realistic, and aligned with what matters most to you.

  • Explain weight management clearly – how energy intake, metabolism, body composition, and physical activity influence weight and long-term health outcomes.

  • Assess your nutritional requirements – ensuring dietary intake supports fat loss while preserving muscle mass and meeting micronutrient needs.

  • Identify nutritional risks – such as low protein intake, inadequate fibre intake, or micronutrient insufficiency.

  • Provide practical dietary strategies – including:

    • Balanced meal structure

    • Appropriate portion sizes

    • Optimising protein intake

    • Increasing fibre for satiety and metabolic health

  • Discuss real-life application – meal planning, shopping, eating out, physical activity in daily life, and sustainable dietary patterns.

  • Agree a personalised plan – clear, achievable steps developed collaboratively to support weight loss, improve health markers, and maintain progress over time.

Your plan will be tailored to your individual needs and goals and, where appropriate, can be shared with your wider healthcare team to support coordinated care.
